Today, past and present enthusiasts of model railroading have seen their hobby move into the forefront of collectors and hobbyists around the world. As after the development of the railroad along with freight and passenger trains, many model train companies began offering a variety of model train sets which included the model train, scenery and the track, some of which were designed more intricately than others. Regardless, anyone who has ever owned a model train knows the excitement one can have by decorating and setting up a theme in addition to the many hours in which one can simply enjoy watching the model train as it makes its way around the track, or in the case of some through a variety of obstacles and tunnels before returning to the station.

While a large population shared this interest in the early days of these model railroads and trains, only after being seen in a variety of storefronts as window decorations around the world did their popularity rise so quickly. For, after seeing the detailed work, layout and themes associated with many of these trains did enthusiasts really become enthralled with the hobby. While today, most everyone either owns, has owned or at the very least has seen one of these model trains first hand.

In fact, today there are so many enthusiasts that in a few different areas museums related to the railroad and the models which followed that museums have been established in their honor. Each of these museums generally host relics related to the time railroading had been developed in the local area. Whereas there are also national museums relating to the development of the railroad and railroading in general.

Such museums may often focus on the history with regards to the development of the railroad but many also document the history of such trains. So, while in fact many museums are designed to be historical, a great many individuals have become more interested in the models on display rather than the history of the original railroad. Fortunately, most individuals who are into model trains are also in to the many stories related to same. Therefore, although some find it more historical at times, others find these historical railroad replicas both fun and exciting as each relates to the development and history of the railroad.

One can also find smaller displays of historical railways and trains at a variety of diners and other institutions around the world. In one such California city, a local establishment has been feeding diners for over eighty years while at the same time building a small railroad museum within the restaurant. Whereas, other locations have been known to have both menus related to trains while model trains often circle above diners. Regardless, locations such as these have also been a driving force in creating both initial and continued interest in the hobby.

Although most individuals see model trains and railroading as a hobby, there are others who are quite serious collectors for both exchange and money. However, it is very difficult to make a large amount of money on an antique train unless it is in mint condition. Regardless, it truly is one hobby which can take a lot of time and attention but one which pays back in great fun and joy at the same time.

So, while one may want to collect antique railroads and trains, one may also want to realize that there is no guarantee that one can get a return on their initial investment over time. Still, a great many individuals find owning these antique relics a great honor and would not sell such a train for anything in the world. So, while some may see these trains as a money making opportunity, others who are into trains for the sole love of railroading, trains and the many hours of enjoyment such an item can bring with very little cost, completely understand.

To this end, whether one is approaching model railroading as a collector or for hobby, one need be aware that it can be a rather addictive one. This is because when one begins setting up model railroads and building model trains, often one can not find a similar interest that is both more exciting and relaxing.
