Collecting LEGO Star Wars Playsets is no mean feat, requiring a lot of time, patience, luck and a little extra cash if you're serious about completing the range. From the original trilogy to the newer three films and incorporating the Clone Wars spin-off, there's a lot of ground to cover, and the chances are if you see it on the screen, you can build it with the bricks!
LEGO Star Wars was the first officially licensed movie product produced by the Danish toy company, who have since found similar success with popular film franchises like Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, Spiderman, Batman and Lucasarts' other major money-maker, Indiana Jones. The ever-popular Star Wars remains the big hitter, though, with everything from household names like the Millenium Falcon to the more obscure A-Wings and B-Wings to be found in brick form.
As always with LEGO, the only limit is your imagination. The beauty of LEGO Star Wars is the fact that you can not only recreate any scenario from the legendary movies, but make your own adjustments, add your own characters and rejig them as you see fit. Didn't like the new trilogy? Build it your own way and teach George Lucas a thing or two.
Collectors who have a fascination for completeness would do worse than to check ebay for the myriad attic clearouts which often provide excellent finds. You'll also find online stores selling complete, unopened sets, often in mint condition. Particularly highly prized are the 1999 Original trilogy sets, which have been replaced with newer versions and been discontinued.
The original X-Wing, Millenium Falcon and Land Speeder, as well as Episode One's Naboo fighter can fetch significantly more than their newer counterparts particularly since some of the mini figures, such as the original Obi Wan and Luke Skywalker, have also been retired, so keep a sharp eye out for the early sets.
If you're a committed LEGO Star Wars enthusiast, be sure to check out the excellent and critically acclaimed LEGO Star Wars videogames, available across platforms. These provide great arcade-style pick up and play fun and are best experienced multi player, allowing you to dip in and out of the saga as any character you like in a lovingly rendered world of bricks.
Collecting Star Wars Playsets, whether for the young or the young at heart is a whole lot of fun. Take a trip down memory lane with classic sets and then build your own, any way you choose. Once you grab the whole range there's no limit to your personal Star Wars universe!
